Michael Vaughan believes England World Cup hero Eoin Morgan is the best captain in world cricket.
Under Morgan’s captaincy, England have developed into the best one-day team on the planet and lifted the men’s World Cup for the first time in history last summer.
Vaughan, who led England to victory during the 2005 Ashes series, says Morgan is a ‘magnificent’ skipper and a level above the likes of Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Tim Paine and Jason Holder.
‘We’ve just spoken to two outstanding captains [Australia’s Paine and West Indies’ Holder],’ the former England batsman said on the Tuffers and Vaughan podcast.
‘Great communicators, very level and humble. They love playing the game, which is one of the main traits.
‘You’ve got to be driving the enthusiasm through your dressing room. You look at Kohli, Root and Williamson… they all love the game.
‘Tim Paine has done a remarkable job when you look where Australia have come from [the ball-tampering scandal].
‘But he’ll be the first to admit that he’s got a great bowling attack with Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc and Lyon.
‘If you ask me to pick out one captain, I think Eoin Morgan is magnificent.
‘You just need to look at what he’s achieved and the way he goes about his business. His body language and presence is great.
‘He’s very clear and direct. He knows exactly the way he wants his team to play. If there’s one captain I would hang my hat on in this era, it would be Eoin Morgan.’
Another former England captain, Nasser Hussain, has also hailed Morgan as the best in the business.
‘Captaincy is about ticking so many different boxes,’ Hussain told Cricbuzz.
‘My best white-ball captain would be Eoin Morgan, not just because he won the World Cup, but because he is calm.
‘White-ball cricket nowadays is just chaos. The batsmen smash everyone, everywhere.
‘You need a calm head so my favourite white-ball captain, the best white-ball captain would be Morgan.’
