Jamie Carragher believes the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta could soon cop a big punishment for their behaviour. The Liverpool legend says Premier League managers’ antics need “stamping down” and singled out the duo who need to change the most.

Klopp was handed a touchline ban towards the end of last season for questioning the integrity of a referee. The German fumed at Paul Tierney following the 4-3 win over Tottenham in April.

Arteta also let fly at the officials after Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle in early November. The Spaniard was charged by the FA but has since escaped punishment after the case was reviewed by an independent regulatory commission.

Carragher believes movement to change manager’s behaviour could come to a head soon. And he reckons Klopp and Arteta could be two high-profile bosses who are targeted.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher said: “I think it’s bubbling [the issue of manager behaviour] and I think it does need stamping down. Maybe a couple of managers, Jurgen Klopp being one, might be the ones who get the full force of it – maybe Arteta.”

Carragher says Arteta portrays a different character to the one he used to play against. And he believes he was fortunate to get away scot-free following his Newcastle charge.

The former defender added: “The thing that fascinates me with Arteta is what I see on the touchline, it’s almost a completely different person to the person I played against. He wasn’t that emotional.

“We played derby games, he was one of Everton’s best players – he was a silky player – but you’d never think he was at a referee or into his own players. I think some of the bookings he’s got – the over-celebrating, the odd thing where you think, ‘Come on, there’s no need for that’.
