Prince William will be tuning in to this year’s World Darts Championship and will keep a close eye on one player in particular. Fallon Sherrock collected her MBE from the Prince of Wales last month and he promised to follow her progress at Ally Pally.

Sherrock was recognised for her services to darts at Windsor Castle at the beginning of November. She became the first woman to win a match at the PDC World Darts Championship in 2019 and also reached the last eight of the Grand Slam of Darts in 2021.

She has become a household name among darts fans, having also won the inaugural Women’s World Matchplay last year. Sherrock admitted on social media after her meeting with Prince William that she was more nervous than being on the stage in a live TV event.

But she settled once she learned that the Prince was a fan of the sport. She told the Mail: “I didn’t know who I was going to meet at the time. When I knew it was Prince William, it was, ‘Oh my God’.

“I genuinely wanted to meet William. I was panicking. I’m thinking, ‘Don’t fall over’, because I’m wearing heels and I’m not used to them and my feet hurt. When he started talking, I lost my words. I was like, ‘Yes. Yes. Yes’.

“I’m thinking, ‘Focus. Don’t embarrass yourself’. He told me he’d seen it broadcast. I was like, ‘You’ve seen darts on TV?’ He started laughing at me, ‘Yes, I’ve seen it on the television’, all in his posh voice. He said he likes the concept, how you can go to the pub and play with your friends.”

Sherrock will be aiming to make more history at this year’s tournament, starting her campaign this evening against Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena. And she could have a royal supporter watching on from home.
