Mick Schumacher could be about to give up on F1 and switch to a new series.

The son of seven-time world champion Michael is currently Mercedes’ reserves driver after being dumped by Haas at the end of last season. Schumacher spent two years with the American-owned team but was axed after a series of expensive crashes for the backmarker outfit.

Haas replaced him with another German, albeit a far experienced one in the shape of Nico Hulkenberg, who has enjoyed an impressive campaign. Mick has been linked with an F1 race for 2024, with Williams weighing up Logan Sargeant’s future after an underwhelming first season in F1.

However, with Mick’s F1 future out of his hands, there are suggestions the former F2 champion could switch to another series and try his hand at legendary endurance race, the Le Mans 24 Hours. According to Motorsport Aktuell, the Alpine group, which competes in both F1 and the World Endurance Championship, have contacted Mick about having a test drive for the French-owned brand.

Fans and many within the sport would be sad to see the Schumacher name leave F1, including Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, who has talked up Mick’s chances of being on the grid next year. The Austrian reckons Mick deserves another opportunity and that Haas heaped too much pressure on the young German too soon.

"He deserves to be on the grid,” Wolff told AutoHebdo. "When you don't feel confident in a car for a long time, you put more pressure on yourself and perform less well. I think that's what happened at Haas.

"He is fast. If you win F3 and F2, it means you have great potential, and he has never been able to show it. I'm happy that we have a third driver who I know will do the job if one of the starters were to withdraw."
