Clash at Daytona 2019: Live updates, highlights from pre-Daytona 500 exhibition race

The green flag officially waves this afternoon as the NASCAR season begins with the exhibition Advance Auto Parts Clash at Daytona International Speedway.

The 20-car all-star race’s field of drivers consists of all 16 of last year’s NASCAR playoff drivers as well as anyone who won a Cup pole in 2018. The 75-lap race around the 2.5-mile track is set to begin at 3:14 p.m. and consists of two stages featuring a competitive caution after the first 25 laps.

Paul Menard sits in poll position after a random draw, while last year’s Cup champion Joey Logano will start in the fourth row with Ryan Blaney. Logano is one of the favorites to win this year’s Clash after winning it in 2017 finishing runner-up last year to Brad Keselowski, but will be making an adjustment as he is one of Ford’s drivers switching from a Fusion to a Mustang GT.

Winning the Clash can forecast success at next week’s Daytona 500. Six times the winner of the Clash has gone on to win the first official race of the season, with the most recent being Denny Hamlin in 2016. Hamlin and Chase Elliot will start in the back row with backup cars after wrecking their primary cars in Clash practice.

Martin Truex Jr. posted the fastest speed at Daytona 500 practice on Saturday at 195.920 m.p.h.. He starts in Row 6.
